One of the top 4 things you need to do if you want to in in real estate investing is to get a mentor. In this episode, we talk with Paul Moore, co-founder of Wellings Capital, entrepreneur and commercial real estate investor and developer, who has been both mentor and mentee. He shares practical advice on the importance of having a mentor how to go about finding a mentor.
Paul, who was previously interviewed on the Old Dawg’s REI Network episode #055, is co-founder of Wellings Capital, a commercial multifamily investment firm and the author of The Perfect Investment – Create Enduring Wealth from the Historic Shift to Multifamily Housing (2016). After graduating with an engineering degree and then an MBA from Ohio State, Paul started on the management development track at Ford Motor Company in Detroit. After five years, he departed to start a staffing company with a partner. They sold it to a publicly traded firm five years later. Along the way, Paul was Finalist for Ernst & Young’s Michigan Entrepreneur of the Year two years straight. Paul later entered the real estate sector, where he completed over 85 real estate investments and exits, appeared on an HGTV Special Real Estate episode, rehabbed and managed rental properties, built a number of new homes, developed a waterfront subdivision, and started two successful online real estate marketing firms. Three successful developments, including assisting with development of a Hyatt Hotel and a multifamily housing project, led him into this arena. Paul is married with four children.
In episode #006, “How to Get Started in Real Estate Investing,” I discussed 4 things you need to do to succeed as a real estate investor.
Finding a mentor, however, can be one of the most challenging tasks to achieve as a newbie investor. In fact, I listed “not finding a mentor earlier” as one of the top 5 mistakes I have made in real estate investing in my recent Fun Facts Friday podcast entitled “My 5 Biggest Real Estate Investing Mistakes… So Far” (episode #064).
Today, our guest Paul Moore will be to zeroing in on number task #2 –“Find a Mentor.” Paul has a depth of experience having been both a mentor and a mentee and will share how he found a mentor for himself and what he looks for in mentees, when he is the mentor.
Paul defines a mentor as “an experienced person who you can really trust to not only take good care of you but who also has strong business ethics and morals. A mentor is also someone you want to emulate and be like.”
